Everything you need for your Newborn Session

Bringing a precious bundle of joy into the world is simultaneously one of the most amazing (but also exhausting) times in one’s life. Nevertheless, savouring every moment in the first days of their lives are memories you’ll want to keep forever.

When I started doing Newborn Sessions, I definitely strayed away from the typical “baby in a bucket/baby in a bag” look and feel. I wanted to approach these sessions with simplicity, capturing newborns and their parents in a more natural way and in the comfort of their own homes. Less poses, more candids!

In an effort to make these sessions easy and as stress-free as possible, I created a simple guide that outlines everything you need to consider when it comes to your Newborn Session:

The location

The best setting for your Newborn Session is at home. Your home is a sanctuary that’s unique to your family. It’s your natural habitat where you and the baby are most comfortable and most relaxed, making for the best and most authentic shots. Whether you’re hanging in the nursery, or feeding the baby in your bedroom—it doesn’t get any realer than that. Not to mention, if you have pets it’s easier for them to join the party when sessions are at home.

The shoot can take place anywhere from the master bedroom and the nursery to your living room. Parents spend so much time designing the perfect space for their little ones, so it’s a great opportunity to document the sentimental details of these special rooms.

Minimize clutter

Make sure the rooms you choose are free of clutter so that the focus in every photo is on you and your little one.

Dressing the baby

Like everything in my sessions, I always like to keep things simple with variety. I recommend putting the baby in a cute onesie, but also recommend parents to have outfits on-hand for some shots that showcase those little fingers and toes.

Outfits for Mom + Dad

In light of keeping things comfortable and natural, I always recommend parents to dress in clothes that they would otherwise wear in the privacy of their own home. You can never go wrong with jeans and a tee. If temperatures are colder, opt for a long-sleeve or a sweater and jeans.

Feed the baby before the session

This is a must! Your baby can get sleepy and will be much happier and easier to work with after he or she has been fed.

Room temperature matters

When a baby is in next to no clothing, room temperature matters. Newborns are sensitive, so during the colder months I recommend turning up the heat and in the summer, I suggest turning off the AC—it’s one more step we can take to make sure the baby is comfortable so we can get as many shots as possible.

These sessions should fun, enjoyable and sentimental. I’m confident if you follow this simple guideline, you’ll love anything the lens brings.

Hannah turns ONE!

This session for little Hannah was all things pretty, floral and girly! More than just a cake smash, I made sure to document some very special moments with Mom and Dad, not to mention the joy of celebrating their little girl and this incredible one-year journey as parents.

We shot this session at @mintroomstudios in Toronto, ON.

Hannah was an absolute doll throughout the entire session. She definitely had no trouble getting her hands into the cake, which always makes for the sweetest (and most scrumptious) photos.

When it came to styling this shoot, I envisioned it to be bright, airy and simple with a subtle pop of colour. Being a parent myself, I have never been one for bright themes and loud characters, whether I'm decorating my kids' bedrooms or throwing them a birthday party. With that said, I prefer simplicity and letting the beautiful little girl or boy be the focus of everything.

I also incorporated a rustic high chair into this session, which paired nicely with the greenery and florals. This chair is actually a sentimental piece that my own daughter used for her birthday session.

Father's Day Feature: Special moments with Dad

A big reason why I was so inspired to get into photography was to capture candid, special moments of my kids as they moved through their childhood. But, once I was able to return the favour to other parents, I knew I was onto something.

A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.

I don’t always need an excuse to look back on my sessions (although it’s my favourite past time!), but with Father’s Day around the corner, I thought it would be a great idea to showcase some of my personal favourite shots featuring some amazing dads and their kids.

Let's not forget the wonderful grandpa's, too!

Whether it’s fathers and their newborns coming home from the hospital, or spending a day at the beach capturing dads and their kiddos in the sand—each of these photos gives you a glimpse into the very truthful, heartwarming bonds between these fathers and their children.

Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, storytellers and lifelong friends.

Wishing all of the dads, step-dads and grandpa's out there a wonderful Father's Day well-spent with their families!

Aiden's Big ONE

Cecile first connected with me in April to discuss her sweet little boy Aiden’s first birthday! Upon speaking to her, it was clear that we had the exact same vision in mind when capturing this celebratory milestone.

This session was so much fun for all of us! When planning any shoot, I always like to keep it simple. I’m not one for themes, but this “Wild One” theme was so perfect and fitting for Aiden's Big One. The pops of greenery definitely brought everything together, giving this session both contrast and brightness, which I absolutely love!

Aiden was such a little gem from start to finish! I usually have to work hard for these smiles, but he was just giving them away for free. We added a little light box and toy animals to accent the shoot and enhance the overall theme.

Little Aiden wasn’t too sure of his cake and definitely needed some encouragement from Mom and Dad, which made for some super sweet shots that will hit you right in the feels. However, he definitely had no problem sampling this yummy delight from Le Dolci with his little hands and toy animals!

I'm always one for collaboration, so I must share that this entire shoot could not have been possible without my dear friend Elizabeth (@somersette). She is the creative mastermind responsible for all of the details and bringing this entire concept to life!
